 The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana. Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic-but-humorously-revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy in the second act. The sudden realization of their mortality affects all the ladies, but also draws on their underlying strength—and love—which give the play and its characters the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

A Southern accent (Louisiana) is required. 

Characters: 

Truvy Jones - Late 30’s to 40’s. The salon owner; anyone who is anyone in the Chinquapin, Louisiana parish goes to Truvy’s. She knows everything about everyone. She also is a gorgeous woman and believes beauty is bought. 

Annelle Dupuy-Desoto - age range can be 18-25. She is new to town and begins working for Truvy as her salon assistant because she is in need of money. She is quiet, but creative and keeps her personal life quiet.

Shelby Eatenton Latcherie - early to mid 20’s. Shelby is “the prettiest girl in town” and loved by all. She has diabetes but doesn’t let her medical condition hold her back from what she wants. She has a unique relationship with her mother and sometimes rebels just to rebel. The play opens on the morning of her wedding. *Shelby will need to be able to portray a low-diabetic episode.

M’Lynn Eatenton - 50’s. M’Lynn is the mother of Shelby. A bit over protective at times, but out of deep love for her daughter. She is a working woman and is very busy. She is seen as strong, but deep down she’s fragile. 

Ouiser Bourdeaux - late 50’s to 60’s. Seen as annoyed and bitter most of the time. She loves two things in life the most: her dog Rhett and her property. Although she seems annoyed at most times she considers all the women her closest friends.

Clairee Belcher - late 50’s to 60’s. She is the widow of the former mayor. She’s is very playful and quick witted. She is a grand dame, has a sweet tooth and is wealthy.
